Overview
Training is what makes your chatbot smart. By providing knowledge sources, you teach the bot about your products, services, and policies so it can answer customer questions accurately.
Knowledge Sources
SmartlyQ supports multiple ways to train your chatbot:
- URL scraping — provide website URLs and SmartlyQ crawls and extracts the content
- Manual text — paste or type knowledge directly
- Document upload — upload PDFs, Word docs, or text files
- FAQ entries — add question-answer pairs for precise responses
How to Train
- Open your chatbot in the editor
- Go to the Knowledge / Training section
- Choose your training method:
- URL Scraping: Enter a website URL → SmartlyQ crawls the pages → Select which pages to include → Train
- Manual Input: Paste text content → Save
- Documents: Upload files → SmartlyQ processes them → Train
- Click Train to process the knowledge
- Wait for training to complete (status indicator shows progress)
- Test your bot to verify it uses the new knowledge correctly
Training Status
- Pending — training queued
- Processing — knowledge being ingested
- Ready — training complete, bot is using the knowledge
- Failed — something went wrong (check the source and retry)
Tips for Effective Training
- Be comprehensive — the more relevant knowledge you provide, the better the bot answers
- Keep it current — update training data when your products or policies change
- Be specific — include exact answers to common questions
- Test after training — always verify the bot responds correctly after adding new knowledge
Tip: Start by scraping your FAQ or help centre pages — this gives the bot immediate value with minimal effort.
